After databases of observed precipitation events and their common characteristics are created, this research activity will focus on categorizing the types of rainfall that occurred by utilizing radar relationships. Rainfall will be categorized as having smaller spatial scales and typically heavier rain (convective precipitation) or larger spatial scales and typically lighter rain (stratiform precipitation). Afterwards, the group will have an understanding of which types of precipitation systems are responsible for extreme precipitation events across the United States.
